Achziv Winery
- Winery
Mark Goberman, the founder of Achziv Winery, produces wine as well as culture. In the small two-room space in the artists’ workshops in Kibbutz Gesher Ziv, Mark houses impressive paintings from his brush and bottles of quality wine from his hands, side by side.
After 27 years as director of communications and electronics at Bezeq, Mark adapted a new life philosophy:
No to working too hard and yes to enjoying everything he does.
A painter is always a painter. To make wine, on the other hand, he had to gain some courage, which he got from his friends at another boutique winery called “Natof”,
in Truman village, and with the help of Maori Hetz, an expert winemaker and friend, who also serves as the professional advisor of Achziv Winery.
Here at Achziv Winery, situated at The Artists’ Workshops in Kibbutz Gesher Ha’Ziv, Mark produces red wines only from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes.
The grapes are grown in the villages of Safsufa, Kerem Ben-Zimra and Ramot Naftali.
When the decision was made to establish a boutique winery, things began to work out by themselves. Grapes were found suitable for making the three types of wine in which the winery specializes,
the winery was named after the region in which it is active and even its logo fell into the hands of Mark “from heaven”.
The ancient seal
Mark participated in archaeological excavations in an ancient Phoenician settlement not far from the kibbutz. In one of the jugs he took out, he suddenly found a seal. When he looked at the seal he immediately knew it was the winery’s logo. If you wish, Mark will give you a comprehensive background on those Phoenicians and their connection to the Jewish people, science and culture in our regions.
If you are short on time, stop by to taste some quality wine and buy a bottle or more of the only 2000(!) it produces each year.
Mark emphasizes that, although the reviews are laudatory, he has no desire to expand and produce more bottles or immerse himself in the work of marketing.
Coordinate a visit with Mark, sit in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere and hear great explanations about wine production, wine tasting and the culture that surrounds it and maybe you’ll also take a look at the exhibition in the next room.
Wine list: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlo, Merlo-Cabernet Sauvignon and dessert wine.
